Little known even to locals, the mysterious waterfall of Grand-Bornand intrigues as much as it amazes. Nestled in a discreet valley at Chinaillon, this waterfall surrounded by legends offers an easy and refreshing walk, ideal for escaping for a few hours in the heart of the Aravis.
A waterfall with an enigmatic name
Why is it called the “mysterious waterfall”? The origin of its name remains unclear. According to a legend passed down from generation to generation, it was at the foot of this waterfall that the first inhabitants of Grand-Bornand met, giving rise to the “Bornandins.” A story that adds a touch of poetry and mystery to this already impressive natural site.
The waterfall, fed by the Nant du Chinaillon, flows into a narrow gorge over about thirty meters. In spring, when the snowmelt swells its flow, the spectacle is particularly striking. In autumn, it’s the charm of the colors and water that captivate.
An accessible walk in the heart of Chinaillon
The hike to the mysterious waterfall is a short outing of about 5 km, with a moderate elevation gain (148 m). The start is from a bend on the main road of Chinaillon, where a small sign indicates the path. Quickly, the trail leads you through meadows and forests, up to the first part of the waterfall, probably the most impressive.
A few minutes further down, a steep path descends to the Chinaillon torrent. There, a gorge carved by water reveals the full power of this wild site. Access can be muddy: good shoes are therefore essential.
