Haute-Savoie is not just about the slopes. Between Lake Annecy, the villages of the Arve valley, and the resorts of the Mont-Blanc massif, several options coexist for the end of the year. Here is what is already confirmed for December 2026, and how to decide based on your dates and budget.
Lake, village or altitude, three atmospheres to distinguish
Annecy is the simplest option if you are looking for entertainment without relying on snow. The Christmas market will occupy the historic center, the quays, and the Jardins de l’Europe from November 26, 2026 to January 3, 2027, with nearly two hundred chalets and an ice rink. In the city center, the chalets close at 9 p.m. from Sunday to Thursday and at 9:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, with an earlier closing time at 7 p.m. on December 24 and 31.
In the mountains, the atmosphere changes markedly. Chamonix usually sets up its Christmas village on the Triangle de l’Amitié square, while Megève gathers its artisan chalets on the esplanade of the ice rink, in the heart of the village. The detailed programs for the 2026 edition had not yet been published at the end of summer, so they will need to be checked during November with the relevant tourist offices.
Regarding access, the department does not have a major airport, but Geneva is located about forty kilometers from Annecy, making it the main gateway, and using a cheap flight comparator helps to manage the transport budget before booking accommodation. From Cornavin station, the Léman Express serves Annecy, Annemasse, Cluses, Évian-les-Bains, and Saint-Gervais, and seasonal shuttles connect the airport to the main resorts.
What is already set for December 2026
As for skiing, openings are spread over three weeks. Chamonix starts on November 28, Châtel on December 4, Flaine and Les Contamines-Montjoie on the 5th, Avoriaz on the 11th, then La Clusaz, Le Grand-Bornand, Megève, Morzine, and Saint-Gervais on December 12. Les Gets follows on the 13th, while most family resorts, from Samoëns to Praz-sur-Arly via Combloux, wait until the 19th. These dates are provisional and may shift by a week depending on snowfall.
Another event to know before booking is the Biathlon World Cup returning to Grand-Bornand from December 7 to 13, at the Sylvie Becaert stadium. Attendance is considerable and accommodations book up early, including in neighboring municipalities of the Aravis.
Choosing your dates methodically
The Christmas school holidays run from Saturday, December 19, 2026 to Monday, January 4, 2027, and they are common to zones A, B, and C. Everyone leaves simultaneously, which concentrates demand over the last two weeks of the month, both for accommodations and ski lifts.
Hence the interest of looking at the first half of December, during which ski passes are negotiated at rates significantly lower than those during the Christmas period. The compromise definitely exists, since the early season snow cover remains uncertain and not all sectors are yet operating. If you are traveling without school-aged children, this window is nevertheless worth considering. Otherwise, it is better to aim for a village served by regional coaches and to book before autumn.
Finally, avoid reducing the end of the year to ski lifts alone. The lake shores, markets, and valley events operate regardless of the weather, which secures a family stay even if the season starts late.
