A Spectacular Viewpoint

The Aiguille du Midi gets its name from its geographical position: it is almost exactly on the Mont-Blanc meridian line, which means the sun passes over its summit at noon. It is an impressive natural viewpoint that allows admiring the Mont-Blanc, the Grandes Jorasses, and even the Swiss and Italian peaks on clear days.

A Bit of History

The history of the Aiguille du Midi is rich and testifies to human technical achievements to conquer the summits. Before the 20th century, reaching the peaks of the Aiguille was reserved for seasoned climbers. In 1818, the Simond brothers, mountain guides from Chamonix, completed the first successful ascent. It was just a beginning for a site that would quickly become iconic in the world of mountaineering.

The beginning of the 20th century marks a new stage in the history of the Aiguille du Midi with the ambition to make this summit more accessible to the general public. In 1909, a first funicular project was launched but was interrupted by the First World War. It was not until 1924 that the first cable car was inaugurated to connect Chamonix to the Plan de l’Aiguille (located at 2,310 meters), facilitating access to a first stage of the mountain.

However, the real turning point came in 1955 with the construction of the Aiguille du Midi cable car, at the time the highest cable car in the world. This colossal project lasted several years, requiring extreme working conditions at high altitude. The work, led by engineer André Rebuffel, is an engineering feat and a symbol of alpine modernity. It immediately attracted visitors from around the world, offering thousands of people the opportunity to approach Mont-Blanc without needing alpine skills.

The cable car has been regularly modernized over the decades, and new tourist facilities have been developed at the summit, such as the iconic “Pas dans le Vide” and panoramic terraces. Today, the Aiguille du Midi is not only a tourist attraction but also a key site for climbers wishing to attempt the ascent of Mont-Blanc or other great routes in the alpine massif.

Once on site, the local bus network Chamonix Bus offers regular trips in the Chamonix valley and serves the Aiguille du Midi station. This service is often free for holders of the guest card (offered by many accommodations in the valley).
