Chamonix hardens its stance: wild parking of camper vans now prohibited

It is now official. Facing the increase of campervans, vans, and converted vehicles parking outside designated areas, the municipality of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc has decided to tighten the rules. A municipal decree issued on August 5, 2026 now more strictly regulates their parking and particularly targets wild camping overnight stays. This measure aims to address the nuisances observed in several areas of the valley.

Chamonix moves from awareness to regulation

For several summers, the presence of campervans and especially converted vans has become a sensitive topic in the Chamonix valley. However, the summer of 2026 marks a turning point.

On August 5, 2026, the mayor of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, François-Xavier Laffin, issued a municipal decree strengthening restrictions concerning the parking of campervans and converted vehicles within the municipal territory.

The decision had been announced for several weeks. It is now effective and concretely changes the possibilities offered to travelers wishing to spend the night in their vehicle in Chamonix.

The principle displayed by the municipality is now clear: campervans must use the designated spaces to accommodate them and wild parking, especially in natural areas, is no longer tolerated. The valley’s official website explicitly states today that “any parking outside of identified spaces” is prohibited.

The “van life” increasingly visible in the valley

Why such a decision?

Like many mountain destinations, Chamonix has faced a spectacular rise in campervans, vans, and converted vehicles for several years.

The phenomenon is obviously not unique to the Mont-Blanc valley. But in an area where available spaces are limited and where summer tourist traffic is particularly high, the consequences quickly become visible.

Some discreet spots become very popular after being shared on social networks or specialized “van life” apps.

The problem, moreover, does not only lie in the presence of the vehicles. The municipality especially points to behaviors that turn simple parking into a real installation: tables, chairs, awnings, and other equipment set up around the vehicle.

The rules now published by the Tourist Office are unambiguous: a campervan must remain “roadworthy” and no protrusion onto public roads, such as tables, chairs, or awnings, is tolerated.

Overnight stays now tightly regulated

The regulations particularly target vehicles that settle to spend the night outside authorized areas.

The town hall reminds that it is forbidden to spend the night between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. in parking lots, adjacent streets, and the edges of wooded areas. It is also forbidden to picnic in parking lots or unpack belongings there.

Regular campervan parking remains subject to the general rules applicable to vehicles. The Tourist Office recalls that a campervan belongs to the M1 category and can park like a car when its parking is neither dangerous, nor obstructive, nor abusive.

In Chamonix, the maximum authorized parking duration by municipal decree is indicated as 24 hours. But this does not mean that any parking space can be turned into a camping spot. It is precisely this distinction that the municipality now wishes to enforce much more strictly.

Controls and fines for offenders

The order of August 5 also marks the municipality’s willingness to move to a more coercive phase after a period of awareness. Campervan users and operators of similar vehicles circulating or parking outside designated zones are exposed, among other penalties, to a fine of 35 euros, according to information currently communicated by the valley’s Tourist Office.

The goal is notably to prevent certain natural spaces or small parking lots from gradually becoming makeshift camping areas.

This policy is part of the broader strategy led by Chamonix to better manage the consequences of particularly heavy tourist traffic.

Where can you park a campervan in Chamonix?

Banning wild parking also implies offering alternatives to visitors. Since April 2026, the municipality has had a new parking area specifically for campervans at the Cry locality, at the entrance to Chamonix.

The facility has 49 spaces according to the Tourist Office and accommodates vehicles over 2.20 meters high and under 7 meters long. It is about a ten-minute walk from the center of Chamonix.

However, caution: the Cry parking lot is neither a campsite nor a service area. It is therefore forbidden to set up tables and chairs or to unpack belongings there.

A free service area is also located on route Blanche, near a supermarket. It allows wastewater disposal and water supply during its opening hours.

The valley currently lists two parking areas authorized for campervans as well as one service area, while the Tourist Office primarily recommends staying in campsites.

A measure that fits into a broader policy

The decision regarding campervans is not isolated. In recent years, Chamonix and managers of natural areas in the massif have multiplied measures to better regulate certain practices in response to the increase in visitors.

Parking, bivouacking, visiting natural sites, or even traveling: the question remains the same, seeking a balance between Chamonix’s exceptional attractiveness, the preservation of natural areas, and residents’ quality of life.

The explosion of “van life” now adds a new issue. Unlike tourists staying in traditional accommodations, travelers in converted vehicles can easily spread out across the valley and look for free spots away from official structures.

It is precisely this dispersal that the municipality now seeks to limit.

Campervan users: what you need to know before coming to Chamonix

For those planning to come to the valley by campervan or van this summer, it is better to anticipate parking.

The new decree does not mean that campervans are banned in Chamonix. The municipality continues to welcome them and even created a new parking lot in 2026. However, the logic of seeking a small isolated parking spot or a place in nature to spend the night quietly becomes particularly risky.

Travelers must now prioritize campsites and officially authorized locations, respect the maximum parking duration, and keep their vehicle in driving configuration when using a parking lot.

The updated rules and parking solutions are available on the official page dedicated to campervan reception in the Chamonix valley.

With the decree issued on August 5, 2026, Chamonix sends a clear message: campervans and vans remain welcome in the valley, but no more settling just anywhere to spend the night.
