For a long time, the Mer de Glace was one of those places you hear about everywhere. Spectacular photos, legendary glacier, must-see excursion… Through superlatives, we had almost convinced ourselves that the experience would be disappointing compared to reality. A site too touristy, too crowded, too famous to truly surprise.
Then we went there. And the feeling on site was very different from what we had imagined.
The journey already changes the atmosphere
The adventure begins as soon as you board the famous Montenvers – Mer de Glace train. Within minutes, the valley fades away, the forests rise, and the peaks get closer. You quickly understand that the visit is not just about “seeing a glacier.”
The journey is an integral part of the experience. The higher you go, the more impressive the scenery becomes.
An arrival far more spectacular than expected
Once at the viewpoint, the first glance toward the Mer de Glace surprises. It is not only the size of the glacier that strikes, since it has greatly diminished with climate warming, but the power of the entire landscape. The rocky ridges, the sharp needles, the contrasts between snow, stone, and ice give a true sensation of high mountain.

Even those who thought they knew the place through images discover something larger, more raw, and more alive.
What really hits you: the emotion of the place
Sometimes you come for a postcard. Often you leave with something else.
On site, it is impossible not to notice the traces of glacier retreat. The historical markers visible on the site remind how much more space the ice once occupied. This dimension makes the visit stronger than expected. You do not just observe a landscape: you witness its evolution in real time.
That is probably what makes the Mer de Glace so striking today.
The ice cave remains a real highlight
Another surprise: the descent to the ice cave. Many think of it as a secondary attraction. In reality, entering this bluish world carved out of the ice brings a very concrete dimension to the visit.
The temperature, the filtered light, the sculpted volumes… the experience perfectly complements the outdoor panorama.

So, overrated?
Honestly, no.
The Mer de Glace mostly suffers from its immense reputation. When a place is so famous, one often expects to be disappointed. Yet on site, the combination of the railway journey, alpine scenery, glacial history, and visual emotion still works fully.
It is not a simple tourist attraction: it is one of the great natural sites of the French Alps.
Our tips to really enjoy it
To have the best possible experience:
- come early in the morning to avoid crowds;
- choose a clear day to enjoy the panoramas;
- bring warm clothes, even in summer;
- take the time to stay on the panoramic terraces;
- also visit the ice cave and educational spaces.
Verdict
We thought the Mer de Glace was overrated. Above all, we discovered an iconic place that retains a true emotional power. Yes, the site is known. Yes, it attracts people. But some destinations become famous for good reasons.
And facing this unique scenery above Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, it is hard to claim otherwise.
