The last weekend of September, Annecy will host one of the most iconic sporting events in Haute-Savoie. Created in 1987, the International Triathlon of Lake Annecy is one of the most renowned competitions in France. Usually held at the beginning of summer, the event will exceptionally take place on Saturday, September 26 and Sunday, September 27, 2026, a calendar change linked to the organization of the G7 in Haute-Savoie a few months earlier.
Organized by the Annecy club Les Hydros, this event attracts athletes every year from all over France but also from numerous European countries, attracted by a course considered one of the most beautiful on the national circuit.
A unique setting between lake and mountains
Few events offer such a spectacular setting. The swimming section takes place in the particularly clear waters of Lake Annecy, often described as one of the purest lakes in Europe. The competitors swim at the foot of the mountains before reaching the transition zone located near the Pâquier.
The cycling course then takes the triathletes onto the hilly roads overlooking the lake, with a demanding route that notably crosses the Bauges Massif Regional Natural Park. The climbs and technical descents offer remarkable views of the lake and surrounding peaks.
Finally, the running race follows the lake shores and the famous gardens of the Impérial Palace before passing near the Pont des Amours, under the cheers of a large crowd.
A program for all levels
The Annecy Triathlon is not only aimed at the most experienced athletes. The weekend is organized around several formats to allow the greatest number to participate:
- Youth Triathlon on Saturday;
- introductory events;
- paratriathlon;
- Individual Olympic-distance Triathlon (M);
- Relay M Triathlon, with men’s, women’s, or mixed teams.
The main event, scheduled for Sunday morning, follows the Olympic format:
- 1.5 km swimming
- approximately 43 to 47 km cycling depending on the chosen route
- 10 km running
The cycling course includes nearly 770 meters of positive elevation gain, making it a particularly selective triathlon despite an accessible distance.
More than a competition, a true celebration of sport
Throughout the weekend, the atmosphere is particularly friendly along the quays of Annecy. Spectators can attend several starts, encourage competitors on the various sections of the course, or enjoy the many activities set up around the partners’ village.
Families especially appreciate the events reserved for the youngest, which allow them to discover triathlon in a safe environment.
The organization also relies on the commitment of several hundred volunteers mobilized by the Hydros club, a key element that greatly contributes to the friendly reputation of this competition.
An important tourist impact for Annecy
The International Triathlon is also a major event for the local economy. Each edition generates several thousand overnight stays in hotels, campsites, and vacation rentals in the Annecy area. Restaurants, shops, and tourist activities also benefit from the presence of athletes and their companions.
Holding the race at the end of September also helps extend the tourist season after the summer holidays, while offering often ideal conditions for outdoor sports: milder temperatures, lower tourist traffic, and autumn colors beginning to appear around the lake.
