The Rouget Waterfall

You are staying in Haute-Savoie and looking for an iconic place to visit? You must not leave without stopping by this absolutely beautiful site.

The Rouget waterfall flows from the Salles torrent and belongs to the Giffre valley. It cascades over 80 meters, its flow is incredibly powerful. Being at its base is simply intimidating.

It is located 6 km from the commune of Sixt-Fer-à-cheval. Accessibility is via a small road in summer, which is closed in winter.

You can also access it on foot from the exit of the hamlet of Salvagny (parking at Nant Sec), after Sixt, in 1h15 of walking (140m elevation gain, mainly through woods). From the parking lot, take the dirt path that immediately descends on the right, below the parking area. Find the GR5 route and follow the direction of the Rouget waterfall.

Do you know its little nickname? The Rouget waterfall is also called “the queen of the Alps“. It is a particularly popular place. We recommend going there in the morning to enjoy this beautiful spectacle.

Furthermore, do not forget some safety instructions. The stones at its foot are wet, making them slippery. Wear appropriate footwear and do not get too close to the point of fall. Increased caution for children.

A popular story says that the waterfall has virility and fertility virtues. To the point that the elders still offer a vial of this water to newlyweds.

Just after the waterfall, the Auberge du Rouget awaits you to refresh yourself on its terrace with an unbeatable view.
