The Festival of Lake Annecy

The Annecy Lake Festival: a magical spectacle in the heart of the Alps

Every year, in August, the shores of the magnificent Lake Annecy light up to host one of Europe’s largest fireworks displays: The Lake Festival. This iconic event is a true celebration of the lake’s natural beauty, combined with a luminous and musical show that attracts thousands of visitors from around the world.

Fête du lac d'Annecy

A bit of history

The Lake Festival originated in 1860, during festivities held in honor of the visit of Emperor Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie to Annecy. Since then, this tradition has been perpetuated and has evolved to become what it is today: an unmissable event on the Annecy summer calendar. Each edition is unique and features a new theme, immersing spectators in worlds as varied as they are magical.

A grand pyrotechnic show

The highlight of the Annecy Lake Festival is undoubtedly its pyrotechnic show lasting over an hour. On the lake, at the foot of majestic mountains, fireworks follow one another, synchronized with carefully selected music, creating a spectacular visual and auditory harmony. The staging is so impressive that it is considered one of the largest synchronized fireworks displays in Europe.

The fireworks are launched from barges positioned on the lake, offering spectators all around an unparalleled view of this ballet of lights and colors. Every year, more than 200,000 people gather to attend this enchanting show, which transforms the Annecy sky into a fleeting work of art.

A festive atmosphere all around the lake

But the Lake Festival is not limited to its nighttime show. All day long, the atmosphere is festive on the quays and in the center of Annecy. Numerous activities are organized, such as concerts, street performances, and gastronomic stands showcasing local products. It is also an opportunity to discover the treasures of Annecy’s heritage while strolling through the cobbled streets of the old town or enjoying the many activities offered around the lake: boat rides, pedal boats, or even family picnics in the surrounding parks.

An exceptional setting

The natural setting of the festival is one of its greatest assets. Lake Annecy, often called “the purest lake in Europe,” is surrounded by mountains that form a breathtaking backdrop for the festivities. At nightfall, when the first rockets burst in the sky, the reflection of lights on the calm lake water adds a magical dimension to the experience. The mountains outline the horizon, creating a sense of depth and grandeur that makes this evening unforgettable.

Practical tips to enjoy the Lake Festival

To fully enjoy the Lake Festival, it is advisable to plan ahead. Tickets for the official seated stands sell out quickly, but it is also possible to find free spots all around the lake to admire the show. Here are some tips to make the most of this exceptional evening:

  • Book your tickets: If you want a seated spot with an unbeatable view, be sure to purchase your tickets as soon as they go on sale, usually in spring.
  • Arrive early: The areas around the lake fill up quickly. If you choose a free spot, arrive a few hours before the show starts to find a good place.
  • Prepare a picnic: What better way to spend the day relaxing by the lake while waiting for the evening festivities? Bring a picnic and enjoy the surrounding nature.
  • Use public transport: Annecy can be very busy during the Lake Festival. Prefer public transport or shuttle services provided to avoid traffic jams.
