A charming interlude between canal, craftsmanship, and the sweetness of life
Along a winding road in Savoie, a small village discreetly reveals itself, as if resting on the water. Here, time stretches, passersby stroll, and bicycles replace cars. Chanaz is the kind of place you don’t really look for, but never forget. And one thing is certain: at first sight, you will fall under its spell.
A miniature Venice between Lake Bourget and the Rhône
Located between Lake Bourget and the Rhône, Chanaz is crossed by the canal de Savières, a peaceful waterway lined with flowered houses, wooden docks, and lively terraces. The lapping of electric boats, the ducks lingering by the canal’s edge, the colorful shutters of the homes… everything breathes tranquility.
It’s the kind of place where you arrive for a walk and leave conquered — sometimes even with the desire to come back and settle down.
A day in Chanaz: what to do, what to see?
1. Walk along the canal
Start with a stroll on foot or by bike along the banks. The more curious can follow the canal’s greenway, ideal for a peaceful loop ending at the lake.
2. Visit the artisans
Chanaz is also a village of craftsmen: don’t hesitate to step inside the artisan oil mill, the clog workshop (workshops for clogs and wooden objects), or the local roaster.
3. Gourmet break on the terrace
The waterside terraces are numerous and welcoming. At noon, taste a local specialty: Bourget lake whitefish fillets, quenelles, or blueberry tart.
4. Boat or paddle ride
It is possible to rent small boats without a license, take a cruise boat tour, or go on an adventure by paddleboard. Another way to discover the village… from the water.
An authentic… and lively village
Chanaz is not just a postcard setting. It’s a lived-in, vibrant village where inhabitants take care of their environment. Every flower, every facade, every alley seems designed for the pleasure of the eyes. Away from the crowds but never deserted, Chanaz attracts lovers of nature, simplicity, and authenticity.
My impression of Chanaz
I discovered Chanaz somewhat by chance, leaving the highway for an impromptu break. An hour later, I was sipping an artisanal lemonade on a terrace, my feet nearly in the water. The murmur of the canal, the smiles of the shopkeepers, and that rare feeling of being exactly where I was meant to be.
