Haute-Savoie, along with Savoie and Isère, is a paragliding paradise. Some of the best free-flight sites are located in this region. Mieussy, the birthplace of paragliding in the 1980s, still sees many paragliders soaring over its mountains, even though newer sites have taken its place as the paragliding capital. Currently, the sites around Lake Annecy (Planfait and Montmin in particular) are the mecca of free flight, as evidenced by the installation of a regulator at the Montmin (La Forclaz) launch site during the summer of 2004 following extreme overcrowding. The flying environment, the proximity of the lake and the mountains (La Tournette, the Dents de Lanfon, among others), make it an exceptional site in more ways than one.
