This winter getaway on the shores of Lake Léman will delight the most adventurous

Looking for an original destination, easy to reach by train and far from tourist crowds? Let yourself be tempted by Aigle, a Swiss gem nestled just a short distance from the Lake Geneva. Here, winter reveals a precious tranquility, ideal for recharging and marveling.

A haven of peace surrounded by vineyards, at the gates of Lake Geneva

The first encounter with Aigle is an invitation to contemplation. Located in the canton of Vaud, in the heart of a generous valley, the town stretches out under the benevolent protection of mountains with snow-dusted peaks. The fresh air is softened by this relief, offering an unexpected mildness compared to the large neighboring cities. Winter here is less harsh, as if the summits watch over to preserve this little corner of paradise.

The Rhône meanders nearby, bordering the famous Chablais vineyards that dress the hillsides in deep green then golden hues, even under the snow. At the end of the road, Lake Geneva unfolds its shimmering waters, offering sublime panoramas at every turn of the walk. Strolling along its shores is to feel the invigorating air on your skin, hear the crunch of snow underfoot, and admire the sky’s ever-changing reflections on the water.

Access to Aigle from France is child’s play. High-speed trains connect Paris, Dijon, Lyon, Aix-en-Provence, or Marseille to Lausanne. From there, a regional train takes you to Aigle in less than an hour. This journey, which runs along the shores of Lake Geneva, is in itself an enchanting prelude to your stay: the landscape unfolds, grandiose, and you already feel elsewhere, heart light.

From Haute-Savoie, access to Aigle is also very simple: there are direct trains between Annemasse and Aigle. It is also possible to get there from Chamonix but the train trip is much longer and less direct. By road, just head towards Montreux, then on to Aigle.

A living heritage between history and traditions

Aigle is also a journey through time. The history of the town is rooted in Roman Antiquity, but it is especially in the streets of the old town that one feels the strength of the past. I wandered through these neighborhoods on a winter morning, the cobblestones shiny with frost, and was struck by the beauty of medieval houses, the blacksmiths’ signs, and the small antique shops. Here, every façade tells a story, every stone seems to keep the memory of centuries.

The highlight of the show is the Aigle Castle. Proudly standing amidst the vineyards, it has watched over the town since the 12th century. During my visit, the morning mist enveloped the towers, giving the place a mysterious aura. Today, the castle houses the museum of the vine, wine, and labels. Wandering through its vaulted rooms is to dive into the world of dry white wines from the Chablais, taste the passion of local winemakers, and discover traditions still very much alive. Impossible to leave without having tasted a glass on-site, facing rows of vines asleep under the snow.

An authentic sweetness of life

During my stay, I discovered cozy little cafés where one warms up with hot chocolate, markets where local products delight the taste buds, and inhabitants proud of their terroir. Far from crowds, Aigle offers a rare parenthesis, where one takes the time to savor every moment. You linger in an old bookstore, stop in front of a craft shop, marvel at the golden light caressing the rooftops at dusk.
