5 tips for responsible skiing in Haute-Savoie

Between lakes, forests, and snowy peaks, Haute-Savoie attracts thousands of ski enthusiasts every winter. But the mountain is a fragile ecosystem. Good news: it is entirely possible to enjoy the pleasures of skiing while reducing its environmental impact.

Here are 5 simple actions for skiing more responsibly, without giving up the magic of snow.

1. Choose a committed resort

Even before putting on your skis, everything starts with the choice of the resort.
Some, like Les Gets, La Clusaz, or Samoëns, multiply concrete actions: electric shuttles, responsible snowmaking, strengthened selective sorting, and promotion of local products.

👉 Check if your resort has a Flocon Vert label, a sign of a real commitment to sustainable tourism.

2. Favor soft mobility

The journey often represents the largest part of a ski trip’s carbon footprint.
Before taking the car, think about greener alternatives:

  • Train to Annecy, Cluses, or Thonon-les-Bains, then shuttle to the resort.
  • Carpooling among skiers: economical and friendly.
  • Once there, get around on foot, with snowshoes, or by free ski bus.

3. Rent or repair your equipment

Skiing generates a lot of equipment… often unused.
Rather than buying new gear every year, rent your equipment or opt for second-hand gear.
Many resorts now have repair and maintenance workshops to extend the life of skis, boots, and technical clothing.
A simple gesture, good for the planet and your wallet.

4. Respect the mountain and its wildlife

The mountain is a living space before being a playground.
To ski responsibly:

  • Stay on marked trails to avoid disturbing the wildlife.
  • Keep your trash with you, even if biodegradable.
  • Avoid loud music in natural areas: the chamois and black grouse will thank you.
Every small gesture counts to preserve these landscapes we love so much.

5. Consume local and seasonal

Responsible skiing is also about what’s on your plate!
Favor mountain restaurants that cook locally, with seasonal products: tomme, reblochon, artisanal charcuterie, or dishes made with Savoyard vegetables.
It’s tastier and supports the local economy.

Responsible skiing, a mindset above all

Responsible skiing doesn’t require big sacrifices, just a bit of awareness and common sense.
By choosing better, consuming less, and respecting more, everyone can help preserve the mountains of Haute-Savoie for future generations.
