Haute-Savoie is a skier’s paradise in all its forms. Contrary to what one might think from the region’s name, the mountains here aren’t actually that high, except of course in the Mont Blanc massif. Most resorts are located at an altitude between 1,000 and 2,000 meters. A few reach 2,500 meters. The only exception, as we’ve already mentioned, is the Mont Blanc massif, which offers slopes up to 3,300 meters, and even 3,800 meters for the Vallée Blanche at the Aiguille du Midi. But be warned, these are high-mountain routes, and even though they are very popular, there are still some risks, as the skiing takes place on a glacier.
Apart from these few slopes reserved for very good skiers (or good skiers accompanied by a high mountain guide), the majority of resorts have a “family” aspect in a setting as commonly imagined: small villages, wooden chalets in the middle of the fir trees, festive atmosphere… Perfect setting for an ideal holiday.
