There are hikes that leave a mark far beyond mere physical effort. Trails that awaken all the senses, where every step seems to bring us closer to a place still kept secret by the mountains. This one is part of those rare routes that offer, at every turn, a new surprise. A hike where water becomes the guiding thread of an unforgettable journey.
We set off without really knowing what awaits us. A simple indication on a map. A small parking lot tucked away in a wooded valley. And then, quickly, something changes.
A captivating introduction
From the very first meters, the atmosphere is set: the freshness, the shade of the fir trees, the damp smell of moss… and that persistent murmur that seems to call us. The path climbs gently, but the hiker’s breath is quickly stolen by another: that of the first waterfalls, appearing out of nowhere.
They appear without warning, crashing and sparkling, as if competing with each other to catch our gaze. And this is just the beginning.
A timeless aquatic parade
As the ascent progresses, the waterfalls succeed one another, each more beautiful than the last. Some are tall and direct, others wider and more tumultuous. They leap between the walls, form basins, create mists in which fleeting rainbows dance. We move forward in an enchanting, almost unreal setting.
The forest thins out, the waterfalls double their strength, as if trying to hold us back. And yet, something pushes us to continue, like a call coming from above.
An arrival at the summit… or almost

After nearly two hours of steady climbing, the scenery changes drastically. The fir trees fade away. A wide alpine plain appears, surrounded by dizzying cliffs. And there, resting like a mirage, a small stone refuge welcomes hikers. The atmosphere is peaceful, the cowbells ring in the distance, the marmots whistle from their promontories.
We sit down. We breathe. We look around. And we understand: we have not just gone on a hike. We have crossed a world.
Lush nature
In this preserved valley, wildlife reigns. Curious marmots, graceful chamois, ibex perched on the ridges… A little silence is enough for the mountain to come alive. On the ground, carpets of gentians and arnica brighten the alpine pastures. Every bend, every corner, hides a fragment of wild life.

The secret finally revealed
Few know about this hike when they arrive in Haute-Savoie. And that’s just as well because it is already quite frequented. But it is earned, discovered step by step. An immersion into one of the most beautiful glacial valleys in the department, a bath of freshness and wonder.
This sanctuary of waterfalls, cliffs, greenery and silence bears a name that insiders pronounce with a knowing smile: the Vallon de Sales, its Refuge de Sales, nestled in the heart of a forgotten aquatic paradise, and of course the various waterfalls along the route, including the Cascade de Sales.
