Located at 700 meters above sea level, above the picturesque village of Samoëns, the Alpine botanical garden La Jaÿsinia stretches over 3.5 sloping hectares, in the heart of an exceptional mountain setting. Thanks to its location on a north-facing slope, the garden benefits from a cool and humid microclimate conducive to the development of many rare plant species.
A history marked by generosity and vision
La Jaÿsinia was born from the will of Marie-Louise Cognacq-Jaÿ, originally from Samoëns and founder, together with her husband, of the famous La Samaritaine stores in Paris. Having become an influential businesswoman, she never forgot her Savoyard roots. In 1906, she decided to offer her native village a botanical garden dedicated to mountain flora, in a philanthropic and educational spirit. To design this space, she called upon the landscape gardener Louis-Jules Allemand, who succeeded in transforming a steep and rocky hill into a living, harmonious, and educational garden. Since 1936, the scientific management of the garden has been ensured by the National Museum of Natural History, strengthening its prominence nationally and internationally.
An exceptional biodiversity from five continents
This alpine garden is not just a green space: it is a genuine living library of the world’s mountains. More than 2,400 plant species are recorded here, coming from the alpine ranges of Europe, but also from Asia, North and South America, the Caucasus, and even New Zealand. You can observe edelweiss, gentian, primrose, as well as rare and protected plants such as Iris perrieri or species that are endangered.
The garden’s objective is both to raise visitors’ awareness of alpine biodiversity’s richness and to actively contribute to its conservation. It is also a research site for botanists and students, who can study plant adaptation to extreme conditions here.
An enchanting and educational trail
The garden is explored via a main zigzag path, punctuated by small secondary paths, viewpoints, ponds, and charming wooden bridges. Informative panels line the walk and help understand the properties, origins, and environments of the various species. You walk through conifer forests, rock gardens, alpine lawns, and wetlands.
Two major historical elements embellish the visit: the ruins of the Tornalta castle, dating from the 12th century, and the Jaÿsinia chapel (1687), both harmoniously integrated into the route. The sound of waterfalls and birdsong accompany visitors on this soothing stroll, accessible to adults and children alike, although some sections are a bit steep.

- Access: The garden is located a 2-minute walk from the center of Samoëns. Entry is free.
- Opening hours:
- From May 1st to October 30th: 8am–12pm / 1:30pm–7pm.
- From November 1st to April 30th: 8am–12pm / 1:30pm–4:30pm.
- Guided tours: available by reservation through the Samoëns Tourist Office.
- Advice: wear good shoes for climbing the trails and bring a water bottle in summer.
