A stone’s throw from Mieussy, in the Giffre valley, hides a place both mysterious and full of history: the Jourdy cave. A natural sanctuary, refuge during the Revolution, and today a pilgrimage site, this cavity crossed by a clear spring attracts hikers in search of authenticity and spirituality.
A sanctuary nestled in the mountain
The Jourdy cave is unlike any other attraction in Haute-Savoie. Located at the heart of a beech forest, it has housed a sanctuary dedicated to the Holy Family since 1881. At the entrance, a statue of the Virgin Mary is placed in a cavity, while a statue of Saint Joseph watches over the left side of the rock.
From the dark, cool vault escapes clear, icy water, which enhances the atmosphere of calm and serenity. Here, the only sounds are those of the spring and birdsong.
A Way of the Cross carved into the mountain
To reach the cave, you must take a steep path from the village of Jourdy. This forest trail is marked by 13 stations of the Way of the Cross, built with local stones. The 14th station marks the cave entrance, with an inscription carved into the rock recalling its erection on May 8, 1881.
This ascent, both athletic and contemplative, immerses the hiker in a timeless atmosphere.

A place steeped in history and legends
The Jourdy cave is not just a natural site: it also served as a refuge during the French Revolution. Between 1792 and 1796, refractory priests secretly celebrated mass here and administered sacraments to the inhabitants. A plaque sealed in the rock commemorates this memory.
Later, in May 1940, over 300 people attended a mass celebrated in the cave. Since then, the place has maintained a spiritual aura attracting pilgrims, curious visitors, and nature lovers.
A hike both athletic and refreshing
Careful, however: while the walk is short, it is far from trivial. The trail is sometimes steep, slippery, and the way back can be difficult to find. Several hikers recommend following a GPS to avoid getting lost.
But for those who dare to venture there, the experience is well worth the effort. The forest’s shade, the freshness of the spring, and the solemnity of the sanctuary offer a unique break, far from classic mountain trails.
