Motorhomes: what changes for your travels in Europe from summer 2025

Summer 2025: the new rules to know for motorhome travel in Europe

Driving license B extended up to 4.25 tonnes
Good news for motorhome enthusiasts: the European Parliament has approved the extension of the B driving license for driving vehicles up to 4.25 tonnes. This measure, aimed at facilitating the use of heavier motorhomes, especially those equipped with alternative engines, will be implemented progressively by Member States, with specific training or exams depending on the country.

Low emission zones: watch out for restrictions
Since January 1, 2025, Low Emission Zones (LEZ) have expanded to 42 French urban areas. Vehicles bearing a Crit’Air 3 sticker or higher are now banned in several major cities, including Paris, Lyon, Montpellier, and Grenoble. Motorhomes are affected by these restrictions depending on their classification (CTTE or VASP) and their engine type.

Regulated parking in Spain
In Spain, motorhome parking is subject to strict rules. It is forbidden to deploy equipment such as awnings, tables, or chairs beyond a certain perimeter around the vehicle. Furthermore, vehicles must be parked on their wheels or on safety blocks, and the discharge of liquids is prohibited. Municipalities may also regulate parking locally based on the size and weight of vehicles.

Greece: tougher parking rules
Since May 2025, Greece has banned motorhome parking outside campgrounds or official areas. Offenders face a fine of €300, even for an engine-off stop without visible installation. However, due to protests, the government has relaxed this measure, allowing parking up to 24 hours in certain residential areas.

Switzerland: new weight-based tax
The Canton of Geneva introduced in 2025 a tax for leisure vehicles, calculated according to the total vehicle weight. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes will see their tax increase significantly, while lighter vehicles will benefit from favorable taxation. This measure aims to encourage manufacturers to produce lighter and less polluting vehicles. Be careful if you pass through the Canton of Geneva during your stay in Haute-Savoie.
