For 28 years, when the end of winter arrives, the old neighborhoods and the shores of the lake are adorned with the colors of hundreds of Venetian masks & costumes. Another way to discover the city of Annecy, which then perfectly lives up to its nickname “Venice of the Alps”.

What is the history of the Annecy Venetian Carnival?
Created in 1995 by Italian teachers from Lycée Berthollet in Annecy, the ARIA association (Association Rencontres Italie Annecy) promotes cultural exchanges between France and Italy. Originally, its purpose was to strengthen ties between Annecy and Vicenza as part of a twinning, but it quickly diversified by offering various activities focused on Italian culture: conferences, trips, conversation classes, and festive events.
Since 1996, the association has initiated the Annecy Venetian Carnival, an event which, over the years, has become a must-see. The first edition, in March 1996, brought together a handful of enthusiasts wearing sumptuous costumes and masks, reminiscent of the famous carnivals of Venice. The following year, the number of participants increased considerably, attracting an ever-growing audience.
In 2003, due to growing enthusiasm, the event was extended to two days and gathered 130 masks, offering visitors a unique immersion in the magical world of the Venetian Carnival. Three years later, in 2006, the program was further enriched with a nighttime opening on Friday and the installation of a stage allowing participants to showcase their costumes under the spotlights.
Since the tenth edition, the event has taken on an impressive scale. Today, nearly 500 masks parade freely through the streets of Annecy and along the lake, creating a magical atmosphere for spectators. A sound-equipped stage, installed in the Jardins de l’Europe, allows the costumes to be admired in all their splendor.
Since 2016, the Venetian Carnival has expanded with the introduction of the “Venetian Week”, offering a varied program including exhibitions, concerts, and conferences dedicated to Italian art and culture. This event continues to captivate lovers of Venice and its traditions, making Annecy a true jewel for this emblematic celebration.
When does the Annecy Venetian Carnival take place?
In the enchanting setting of Annecy, the Venetian Carnival enchants every year on the second weekend following Mardi Gras, a date fluctuating between February and March. On this occasion, several hundred participants, dressed in splendid costumes and enigmatic masks, slowly parade through the streets of Old Annecy, stopping to pose, parade, and gather on a specially arranged stage.
The identity of the participants remains a mystery behind these sumptuous outfits, enhanced by the warm hues of the historic facades. Amateur and professional photographers flock to capture artistic images, immortalizing the harmony of colors emanating from each costume. Young and old marvel at this fairy-tale atmosphere where mystery and elegance mingle, making this event an unforgettable moment.
This year 2025, the Annecy Venetian Carnival will take place from Friday, March 7 to Sunday, March 9, 2025. It is the unmissable event marking the end of winter in Annecy and it is free for spectators.
