What if, for one day, you retraced the centuries? Every autumn, Annecy comes alive to the sound of bells and traditional costumes to celebrate the Retour des Alpages. A unique parade where cows, goats, artisans, and musicians transform the old town into a true living fresco of Savoyard traditions.
Date and times
The great traditional festival of the Retour des Alpages will take place on Saturday, October 11, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., in the heart of Annecy city center.
An alpine village in celebration
From 9 a.m., the alleys of the old town come alive with the installation of craft stalls and local products: Savoyard cheeses, cured meats, potato galettes, tartiflettes, diots, mulled wine… Not to mention a variety of handcrafted creations: jewelry, handmade clothes, etc.
Music, old trades and folklore
The day is punctuated by musical performances, folk groups, demonstrations of old trades, and activities by the Ferme des Jeunes Agriculteurs, offering a lively and authentic immersion into traditional Savoyard know-how.
The highlight: the herd parade at 2:30 p.m.
At 2:30 p.m., time for the spectacular parade: nearly 600 animals (cows, goats, sheep, donkeys, dogs, geese…), accompanied by shepherds in traditional costumes, musicians ringing bells or playing period instruments, parade through the streets of Annecy. A colorful and emotional show, a tribute to transhumance and mountain life.
Due to bovine nodular dermatitis affecting Haute-Savoie, the Retour des Alpages will be held without cows this year. You will still be able to enjoy the festival and the other animals present, but the traditional parade of cows adorned with their bells will not take place.
A festival rooted in history
Organized since 1973 by the Annecy Traditions association, this event is part of the centuries-old tradition of herds returning from the alpine pastures to the valley in autumn. More than a popular festival, it is a celebration of mountain heritage and rural memory.
An exceptional national distinction
At the beginning of 2025, the Retour des Alpages received the prestigious label “Les plus belles fêtes de France”, among 70 applications. This prestigious label recognizes the association’s commitment, the transmission of traditions, and the cultural contribution of this event at the national level.
