Individual equipment :
- 1 pair of snowshoes: see here to choose your pair of snowshoes
- 1 pair of shoes sufficiently waterproof and warm
- 1 pair of gaiters or a snow stop system
- Walking or ski poles with a wide basket (to prevent sinking too much in powder snow)
- Warm and waterproof clothes, even if the weather is nice. Prefer multilayer sets if you can rather than a single thick sweater for example. Indeed, you will be able to uncover yourself gradually during the effort and thus avoid excessive sweating. Do not forget that in very cold weather, sweat freezes!
- Water in an insulated bottle or better, in addition to water, take a hot drink. For Camelbak-type systems, it’s very good but take one that is insulated otherwise, the tube will freeze quickly.
- Hat, gloves, goggles, sunscreen, lip balm.
- 1 backpack suitable for the duration of your hike. A little tip, put your things in a large garbage bag inside your backpack. This way, they will be protected from snow and water.
- Snowshoe hiking takes place in a “risky” environment, an avalanche victim search device (AVD) as well as a probe and a snow shovel are necessary.
- A survival blanket
Collective equipment :
- A small first aid kit can always be useful, so don’t forget it.
- A map, a compass, and an altimeter are essential to navigate in the mountains. And even better, know how to use them!
- The cell phone doesn’t work everywhere but it weighs nothing and you never know…
