The charming alpine resort of Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, in Haute-Savoie, was recently crowned by the prestigious American magazine Condé Nast Traveler as the only French destination featured in its ranking « The Best Places to Go in 2026 ». This distinction marks a turning point: far from being solely a traditional winter sports destination, Saint-Gervais asserts itself as a place of tourism innovation, resolutely focused on the future and responsible tourism.
Why this recognition?
Accessibility and sustainable mobility
The magazine selected Saint-Gervais-les-Bains for the exemplary nature of its transport infrastructures and its commitment to enabling easy access via soft modes of transport:
- The launch of the Le Valléen cable car in 2024 directly connects Le Fayet station to the resort, making it the first installation of its kind in France.
- The arrival of a new fleet of eco-energy trains on the Mont Blanc Express line in 2026 strengthens the rail network and reduces car usage in the valley.
These initiatives are part of a strategy of softer mobility and reducing environmental impact — a key criterion for Condé Nast Traveler’s ranking.
Sustainable tourism and alpine reinvention
The magazine also points out that Saint-Gervais breaks away from the classic image of a “nostalgic resort”:
“…This corner of Haute-Savoie looks less like a nostalgic ski destination than a region reinventing its future, proving that the Alps can still provide thrills while better preserving the mountains…”
This quote sums up the spirit: you find cultural or scientific projects there, such as the upcoming opening of the Glaciorium center (dedicated to glaciers and climate), as well as a desire to offer an authentic experience with reduced impact.
The only French destination in the global top
Condé Nast Traveler’s 2026 ranking presents 26 international destinations and Saint-Gervais is the only representative of France. This distinction gives the town enhanced visibility at the global level, an asset for local tourism but also a responsibility to continue the efforts. See the original Condé Nast Traveler article
Why this changes the game for Haute-Savoie
This international recognition offers several positive effects:
It puts pressure, in a good way, to maintain standards: visibility is increased, as are expectations. It also boosts the region’s reputation: Haute-Savoie is no longer satisfied with being among traditional alpine resorts, it positions itself as a territory of the future. And finally, it attracts a more varied clientele: not only ski enthusiasts, but also travelers curious about nature, soft mobility, heritage, and relaxation.
A perfect balance between adrenaline and well-being
The resort combines sporting activity and relaxation thanks to its Tramway du Mont-Blanc. The latter allows access to the foot of Mont-Blanc from Le Fayet in one hour of travel. On the relaxation side, the millennial thermal water of the Bains du Mont-Blanc, rich in minerals, offers treatments for the skin and respiratory tracts. It is the ideal place to relax in Haute-Savoie.
The authenticity of a preserved alpine village
Unlike overdeveloped resorts, Saint-Gervais retains its authentic charm. Its hamlets like Le Bettex or Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce preserve baroque architecture and a lively village life.
- Exceptional ski domain for winter
- Renowned thermal baths for rejuvenation all year round
- Baroque heritage and lively village life
- Hiking with views of Mont-Blanc for summer
I recommend visiting in summer to enjoy swimming lakes and panoramic trails. This 4-season destination really deserves a place in your travel plans.
My tips to prepare your trip to Saint-Gervais
Convinced? Then here are some tips for your upcoming stay.
My advice: don’t choose between adventure and relaxation, do both!
Start your day with a ride on the Tramway du Mont-Blanc up to the Nid d’Aigle (2372 m) to enjoy breathtaking views of Mont-Blanc. The 1h15 ride travels through spectacular alpine landscapes, with new electric engines since 2022 for optimal comfort.
In the afternoon, relax at the Saint-Gervais Thermal Baths to enjoy the unique thermal water, renowned for its benefits on the skin and respiratory system. Their half-day multi-sensorial bath is ideal for rejuvenation after an active day.
Then stroll through the charming village center to discover its authentic atmosphere, artisanal shops, and typical cafés. Don’t miss visiting the church and tasting a Savoyard specialty in a local restaurant.
